Ernest arrived in Key West in early 1928. Drawing influences from Havana, Cuba and Key West, Hemingway penned numerous novels during his time in the Keys. He soon built his Spanish Colonial home located at 907 Whitehead Street in 1851, which is now a national landmark that so many people visit while in Key West. During his time in this beautiful home, many say Ernest produced his best work: from “To Have and Have Not”, “Green Hills of Africa”, and many short stories “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”, among others.
We are proud of the rich literary ties Key West has developed over time. It is incredibly important to convey this to our guests and offer them a taste of the Keys to take back with them after their stay. This is why we developed a special package for the guest of our resort. The Ernest Hemingway package includes a bottle of Papa’s Pilar rum and tickets to the Hemingway House for a tour of the grounds, complete with some adorable six-toed cats.
Named after Hemingway’s beloved sailing vessel (his muse for many a novel), Papa’s Pilar rum which, “ (brings) together rums from throughout the Caribbean, Florida and Central America into one single pour” was a must-include in our Hemingway package. Not only was it inspired by the Man himself, but there will soon be a Papa’s Pilar distillery mere blocks from The Marker Resort!
To round out a true Hemingway experience, our concierge will be on hand to recommend and book fishing charters to take you out and experience one of Hemingway’s favorite pass times. Charters that top our list include Captain Moe’s Lucky Fleet and Time Flys Fishing. Hitting the high seas with these experienced Captians is sure to garner you a “big fish” story or two!
